Media math is just units and meaning
Most media metrics are simple ratios. The hard part is knowing what the number can and cannot tell you.
Numbers feel objective.
But the same number can be useful, misleading, or irrelevant depending on the media job.
Calculate then interpret.
We will use basic formulas, then decide what each number actually means.
Which metric answers which question?
Match each question to the most relevant metric. Some metrics may be useful but incomplete.
The formulas are simple. The meaning is conditional.
Learn the formulas, then attach each to the decision it supports.
Cost per 1,000 impressions
Useful for delivery efficiency, not proof of impact.
Clicks / impressions
Useful for response rate, not proof of qualified demand.
Cost per click
Useful for traffic efficiency, not proof of business quality.
Cost per action or lead
Useful when the action is meaningful and comparable.
Revenue / ad spend
Useful for revenue return, incomplete without margin and attribution context.
Calculate the campaign before you judge it
A campaign spent $10,000 and produced 1,000,000 impressions, 5,000 clicks, 250 leads, and $40,000 in attributed revenue.
Do not compare unlike channels with the same hero metric
A high-intent search campaign and a broad-reach video campaign may both matter, but they are not built to do the same job.
Search has a higher CTR, so search is better.
This ignores intent, scale, creative role, audience stage, and what the video was supposed to do.
Did each channel perform the job it was assigned?
Search may capture demand. Video may build familiarity, explanation, or reach that supports later demand.
Calculate, then explain what it means
You are given two campaigns. Calculate key metrics, then decide what each number can and cannot prove.
What decision does the number justify?
Use these questions before changing budget, creative, or channel mix.
Media math without fear
You do not need to pretend every number is strategic. Use the right calculation, ask what it really measures, and tie it to a decision.
